Youth Engagement and Learning Internship

This position is a member of the School & Extended Learning Programs team within the Education Department and supports marine science education programs offered by The Marine Mammal Center (TMMC). Under the direction of the Center’s education team, interns will have opportunities to explore high quality youth programs in formal and informal education environments.  As Youth Engagement & Learning Intern, this role focuses primarily on supporting the Seals & Slippers overnight program for organized groups of youth such as scout groups and select offerings for families. The intern will also support on at least one weekday to support, observe and develop resources for school programs and to focus on additional projects to further their own professional development.

The position is supported and supervised by the Coordinator of School and Extended Learning Programs with direct collaboration and support from Marine Science Educators.  The intern role requires self-direction, initiative and passion.    

Intern Responsibilities

    You will assist the Education Department with a variety of roles. These include: 

    • Co-lead the overnight program, Seals & Slippers, including tours, hands-on activities and guided hikes for a variety of audiences including families and scout groups.
    • Organize and assist with the set up and break down of programs and program supplies.
    • Answer program participant questions and help direct them during programs.
    • Interpret animal’s behaviors and animal care procedures to guests.
    • Work with education staff to develop resources supporting school programs.
    • Stay abreast of The Marine Mammal Center and marine science news to be able to inform and enhance programs and inform the public.
    • Adhere to the Center's personnel policies and procedures as defined in the employee handbook and as communicated by management.
    • Attend trainings and check-ins when possible.

    Knowledge & Abilities

    • Enthusiasm for engaging with marine science content for ages Pre-K to adult with a primary focus on youth ages 6-12.
    • Strong communication, inter-personal, and writing skills.
    • Exceptional customer service capacity with a variety of audiences.
    • Excellent time management with the ability to multi-task.
    • Self-directed and ability to take initiative.
    • Ability to communicate well and work as part of a multidisciplinary team to advance the mission of The Marine Mammal Center.

    Intern Qualifications & Experience

    • Two or more years of undergraduate college work required in education, marine science, conservation biology or a related discipline.
    • Background and/or experience in leading/teaching school groups.
    • Background and/or experience in environmental education and natural sciences.
    • Ability to engage and communicate with audiences of all ages and provide exceptional customer service to a variety of audiences.
    • Ability to complete tasks in a productive, proactive manner.
    • Must have access to transportation.
    • Must submit to and pass background check.
    • Must obtain TB test and any other medical examinations or vaccinations as required by state or federal regulations.
    • Ability to stand/walk up to 6 hours without a break and lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
    • Attention to detail and quick to learn.
    • “Can-do” attitude and willing to take on new projects as needed.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

    Intern Schedule

    Candidate must be available to start no later than March 19.  End date is June 2 with the possibility for an extension through August 2018. The ideal candidate is available every Friday evening through Saturday morning plus one weekday for a total of approximately 25 hours per week. Time off must be arranged in advance. This position is unpaid and reports to the School & Extended Learning Programs Coordinator.
