Outreach Education Volunteers

Satellite Outreach & Education volunteers interact with the public at events to help promote awareness of marine wildlife, the work of The Marine Mammal Center, and to further community engagement around ocean stewardship . The Marine Mammal Center will provide Outreach & Education volunteers comprehensive training in natural history of marine mammals, the Center’s work in rehabilitation, rescue, and research of our patients, as well as techniques on how to effectively communicate and engage with the public.

Specific duties

  • Participate in public outreach events and education programs
  • Educate the public about The Marine Mammal Center, marine mammals, and the environment
  • Share the ways the public can help The Marine Mammal Center, marine mammals, and the environment
  • Work as a supportive team player with other TMMC members and provide excellent customer service to all members of the public

Volunteer Characteristics

  • Dedicated, passionate, customer service oriented and humble
  • Be a team player and engage with members of the public of all ages and backgrounds


  • Sign up on the SLO Volunteer Interest List
  • Submit a volunteer application
  • Complete the prospective volunteer screening process, including an interview, background check and motor vehicle check
  • Attend the New Volunteer Onboarding Training (Orientation, Basic Animal Husbandry and Basic Rescue Workshop)
  • Complete Community Outreach Training
  • Watch Pinniped of California webinar (provided by The Marine Mammal Center)
  • Commit to a minimum of one 4-hour shift per month for a minimum of 6 months
  • Shadow at least one 6-hour animal care shift per month
  • Must be 18 or older and have reliable transportation to the facility
  • To be eligible to drive, a volunteer must be at least 21 years of age, have a valid driver's license and clear a motor vehicle report


  • Attend a brief meeting before each event to identify objectives and prepare materials for the event
  • Peer observations at the event and provide feedback and suggestions
  • Personal reflections and debrief after event
