Support Services

Administration

Help us make our plans and dreams a reality. Volunteers are needed to assist with special projects, accounting, and data-entry. Commitment is often flexible, and some administrative tasks may be scheduled on a one-time or an on-call basis. All are integral to The Center's smooth operation.

Communications

Seasoned writers, web support, designers, photographers, and multimedia experts are needed on a project basis.

Development

Does your expertise or preference lean more toward the two-footed rather than four-flippered variety? We could greatly benefit from your help with in-kind donation tracking and pick-up, mailings, data-entry, special events, and research.

Facilities

Do you enjoy building, repairing and inventing? If you have mechanical aptitude, carpentry, plumbing, landscaping or gardening skills, we need you! The facilities crew works every Wednesday. Special projects may be scheduled at other times. Six month commitment is preferred.

Volunteer working in the Info HutInfo Hut

This is the first line of public contact. Volunteers greet visitors, operate the switchboard, answer questions and help ensure that the public's contact with The Center is friendly, efficient, and informative. Plus, The Hut has a fabulous ocean view! Commitment is for at least six months, one day a week for a 3 to 6 hour shift.

Membership

Without our members, The Center could not exist. The Membership Department is absolutely essential in providing support for our pinniped patients. Support our revenue generating efforts and help The Center's work by assisting with membership mail processing, special events and other duties.

The Marine Mammal Center Store

Volunteers take an important part in running a small business and play a significant role in making our visitors welcome. The store is open daily, including weekends, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Commitment is flexible and all the proceeds go directly to benefit the animals.

PIER 39
--The Marine Mammal Center Store and Sea Lion Information
At PIER 39, the seasonal home of the world-famous wild California sea lions, The Marine Mammal Center operates a store and interpretive center, and docents answer questions from visitors at K-Dock.

The Marine Mammal Center Store

At The Marine Mammal Center Store and Sea Lion Information you will have the opportunity to meet people visiting from all over the world. The store is open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Volunteers are asked to commit for at least six months, and hours are flexible.

Sea Lion Information

Working outdoors overlooking K-Dock, docents provide information and enhance visitors' observations of the wild California sea lions. Docents also count the sea lions, and look for tagged or injured animals and unusual species.

Indoors we offer various educational opportunities to visitors; exhibits include videos, an interactive computer, marine mammal specimens and informative displays. Docents working in this interpretive center greet and provide information to drop-in visitors, and perform sea lion population counts. Formal training is provided in January and August.
