Elephant seal pup Bilbo was found on a beach in San Luis Obispo with major shark bite wounds on his shoulder and belly. He was rescued and brought to The Marine Mammal Center to receive much-needed medical treatment.

Once at the Center, veterinarians found that nine-month-old Bilbo had a fractured jaw and a fractured right front flipper, in addition to the wounds on his back, shoulder and neck. Veterinarians performed a partial digit (or flipper bone) amputation on his fractured front flipper to help it heal and also removed a broken canine tooth.

Bilbo was also treated with antibiotics to help aid in his recovery and prevent infection. After over a month of care at the Center, Bilbo was released at San Simeon, near many other elephant seals in his age group.
