Now, before you leave, do you want to make a seal's day?

Paolo the Surfer

Paolo the Surfing Sea Lion

Paolo is a female California sea lion that was rescued December 22, 2010 in Santa Cruz County by volunteers from The Marine Mammal Center. She appeared to have symptoms related to leptospirois, a bacterial infection that affects the kidneys. When she arrived at the hospital, she was rather small, more like a juvenille than an adult, and that is why veterinarians were surprised when they learned that she was actually pregnant! Unfortunately, Paolo had a stillbirth - most likely as a result of her illness. After a month of medical care at the Center, she became healthy and strong. She was ready to return home to the ocean and was released at Rodeo Beach in the Marin Headlands on January 31, 2011. To the delight of onlookers - Paolo could be seen "surfing" the waves!
