Need inspiration? Read how Helen, age 7, raised $280!

Helen Karnstedt is passionate about helping animals.

So this year, no one was surprised when the 7-year old requested donations for The Marine Mammal Center instead of receiving birthday presents.

“Since she was a little kid, Helen has always had a special connection with animals. After an inspirational visit to the Center’s hospital and research facility, she came up with this fundraising idea because she really wanted to help rescue and rehabilitate sick and injured marine mammals,” said her mom, Susan Karnstedt.

When we asked Helen why she was willing to give up her birthday presents, she told us: "The Marine Mammal Center needs it a lot more than I do. Many of your patients have become sick or hurt because of people. It's not fair to the animals. I feel happy to help."

How did she convince her friends and family to give money to the seals instead of spending it on presents? She just told them: "I think it's important to take care of both animals and the ocean. So I decided to raise money to help the seals, otters, whales and dolphins."

Mrs. Karnstedt and her husband, David have been amazed by how much money Helen has been able to generate for the cause. "We are very proud of her and feel fortunate that our friends and family have been so generous," they commented.
