Mythical creatures, super-heroes, an entangled penguin, and a furry, four-legged pirate were just a few of the 1,300+ participants in this year's Run for the Seals event and Family Fun Day. Folks from as far away as Hawaii and Washington State headed to the Marin Headlands to help us raise more than $62,000 online (over $88k total including registration and sponsorship) to help feed this year's seal pup patients.

As runners crossed the finish line, just outside of the Center, Frannie the Fur Seal and a crowd smiley faces cheered them on! Afterwards, people headed to the Center for Family Fun Day where they  enjoyed complimentary food, drink, activities and exeriences from our education department, sponsors and Park Partners.

Kids enjoyed getting their passports stamped at the various learning stations, coloring in their event t-shirts and taking part in our Ocean Trivia Quiz suing our donated HP TouchSmart computers! Everyone loved the FREE Docent-led Tours of the Center and the wonderful hand massages from Aveda. There was plenty of food and drinks too courtesy of Whole Foods, Crystal Geyser, Suzie Cakes, Noahs Bagels, Odwalla, Clif Bar and Can Do Kids Bars and so many other event sponsors.

Then everyone gathered around our bright-red Zodiac rescue boat at the foot of the stairs to the Center for the coveted (!) awards ceremonies. Medals were awarded to the top finishers of the 4-mile race (men, women and children) and prizes were presented to the top fundraisers. Team Flipper Flappers raised more than $9,400 and scooped the Highest Fundraising Team prize for a second year in a row! Lisa Cooke raised over $4,500 and took home the Highest Individual Fundraising prize in the over 21 category (Lisa was also part of the second highest fundraising team - the In Memory of Alan Young team who raised nearly $8,000!). Dani Bier, just 9 year's old, topped the Highest Individual Fundraiser for the under 21 category raising an amazing $1,700!

All in all this Run for the Seals event was one for the record books with the most funds raised and a record visitor turn-out. Thank you to everyone for taking part and a HUGE thank you to all those who fundraised to save our seals - you are super stars and all the staff, volunteers and patients at the Center are incredibly grateful for your fantastic support.

About Run for the Seals:

The Marine Mammal Center invites you to Run for the Seals, Saturday, March 10, 2012 at Rodeo Beach, Marin Headlands in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Sausalito.

Run for the Seals is a fun community event and is one of the Center’s biggest fundraisers held throughout the year. This year the Center hopes to raise $60,000 from the event  to provide essential meals and  medication for sick and injured elephant and harbor seal patients during the pupping season that occurs between late February – early May.  The event boasts two beautiful routes: a hilly 4-mile run and a leisurely 2-mile walk. Both wind through the picturesque Marin Headlands with ocean views.

The event is open to all ages and is perfect for families, runners (casual and pro), hikers, walkers, baby-joggers, dogs on a leash and teams. Participants and dogs who arrive in their best ocean-themed costume will have a chance to win a prize as well!

After the event, all participants are invited to attend a Family Fun Day at The Marine Mammal Center. Guests will enjoy free food, drinks, tours of the Center and experiences from our sponsors. The event was enjoyed by over 1,200 participants last year.
