Research at The Marine Mammal Center focuses on marine mammal health issues to understand the causes of marine mammal strandings, including links to ocean health, and to develop veterinary techniques. Research is conducted in three ways: retrospective analysis of the animals' medical records, clinically during the care of the animal, and through the use of samples collected from animals either during their treatment or after death. Most of this research is performed in collaboration with other agencies, individuals and institutions.

Examples of current research:
Disease Studies

Disease Studies expand our knowledge about the health of the marine mammals we rescue, informing us about the health of wild populations and the health of the oceans.
Clinical Technique Studies

Clinical Technique Studies support the development of new diagnostic tests and clinical procedures to improve the level of care for our patients and marine mammals around the world.
Tagging Studies

Tagging Studies monitor the ability of rehabilitated seals and sea lions to forage, dive, and survive following release, and determine their range so that we can evaluate the effectiveness of our rehabilitation program.
