Whales in San Francisco Bay

Roughly 30 gray whales have been spotted in the Bay this season, many more than is typical. Sadly, there have also been at least 14 deaths this year, which is more than in all of 2024.

We are investigating to help determine the cause of these deaths. By gaining insights into what is causing these tragedies, we can better understand how to help prevent them.

Andi McCall

Rescue & Response Dispatcher

As a Response Dispatcher, Andi takes calls from the public on the Center’s animal response hotline. She also organizes responses and rescues for Northern Range Operations, coordinates animal transport logistics across the California range, supports animal releases back to their ocean home, and keeps enormous amounts of documentation about the animals we respond to in support of our partner agencies and permits.

Andi has a bachelor’s degree in psychology, almost 10 years of experience as an Animal Care volunteer on Thursday Day crew, and a year of active volunteering with the Response team. She is also in the final stages of training as a San Mateo County Search and Rescue volunteer.

Her prior work experience includes the challenging customer service and leadership role of owning and managing a fitness studio through the pandemic.

Outside of work, Andi spends as much time as possible on the coast (usually paddle boarding or hauling random beach trash) and continuing to search for the best cup of hot chocolate in the Bay Area.
