Whales in San Francisco Bay

Roughly 30 gray whales have been spotted in the Bay this season, many more than is typical. Sadly, there have also been at least 14 deaths this year, which is more than in all of 2024. 

We are investigating to help determine the cause of these deaths. By gaining insights into what is causing these tragedies, we can better understand how to help prevent them.

Monterey Bay Operations Coordinator

Daphne Shen supports daily operations of the Center's Moss Landing facility in animal care, response and volunteer training. She has a B.S. in Biological Sciences from Cornell University and a M.S. in Marine Science from Moss Landing Marine Laboratories. 

Daphne has over eight years of experience in marine animal rescue, rehabilitation and research. She has worked with a variety of pinniped, cetacean and sea turtle species on both the East Coast and the West Coast, most recently as a volunteer crew supervisor at the Center's Moss Landing facility and as a field research technician at Año Nuevo studying elephant seals. 

Outside of work, Daphne enjoys crocheting, reading, hiking, traveling and game nights with friends.
