Your Life-Saving Gift Will Be Matched

Found with his flippers tucked tightly against his body, California sea lion Pockets looked like a sick child with a bellyache.

Pockets was battling a potentially fatal bacterial disease, leptospirosis. We've rescued nearly 500 sea lions affected by this year's intense outbreak.

With your matched gift, you’ll not only help provide the meals and advanced medical care needed to help a sea lion like Pockets recover, but also support our researchers in learning more about this disease.

Response Operations Coordinator

In his role as Response Dispatcher, Mike answers calls to our California rescue hotline, coordinating the appropriate responses in our northern range, and empowering and supporting teams at our field offices in their response work.

Mike has worked as a water and climate science writer for the last six years and as a Friday Night Topside Crew volunteer for the last five years. He brings a wealth of environmental knowledge and public communication experience to the Field Operations & Response department.

When not working, Mike is trying to get outside as soon as possible, where he can be seen flopping along underwater in scuba gear, stumbling around above water while sailing in San Francisco Bay, flailing about above ground on various rock formations and gesticulating wildly while photographing elephant seals at Piedras Blancas.
