Babymac
California Sea Lion
Zalophus californianus
California sea lion Babymac was found in a parking lot – a dangerous spot far from where he should be. Luckily our trained responders were alerted through our hotline and, with help from our friends at the Mountain View Police Department, Babymac was rescued and transported to our Sausalito hospital.
Whether in a parking lot or on the beach, it’s important to keep a safe distance of at least 150 feet from wildlife. Approaching them for any reason can cause the animal stress and risk their safety, as well as that of yourself and your pets. Check out our wildlife viewing tips for reference! If you think a marine mammal needs help, keep your distance and call our hotline at 415-289-SEAL (7325).
During an admit exam, our veterinarians found Babymac was severely malnourished, very weak and much too young to be without his mom. After some time in rehabilitative care, his condition improved and he was moved out of our intensive care quarantine unit.
This resilient pup continues to make slow but steady progress, eating small herring and occasional offers of anchovies and squid well on his own. Babymac has started to gain weight and is competing well with his pen mates – all encouraging signs that he is progressing toward returning home after continued time in care.
While this tiny pup still has a long way to go, we’re grateful the support from community gave him a second chance.
